Other: Numerous less-common drugs and medications

Our livers cope with the fatty foods, alcohol and tobacco we consume, and and work on filtering toxins from our blood. But, unfortunately, they can't always handle the effects of the medicines and alternative therapies we take for illnesses and ailments. In fact, certain drugs, both prescription and over-the-counter, inadvertently damage the liver temporarily or even permanently.

Some popular drugs/ medicines have been related to liver toxicity. And many more substances, including herbal drugs and weight loss agents, can damage the liver.

Some medications used primarily to treat epilepsy may also decrease the frequency, duration, and/or severity of migraine headaches. For some common anti-epileptics drugs, tremor, weight gain, and hair loss are common side effects. Rarely, they may cause liver damage. Therefore, symptoms of nausea, vomiting, and yellowing of eyes or skin must be brought to the attention of a doctor immediately. To decrease the risk of liver damage, blood tests must be performed periodically as long as anti-epileptic medications are taken.
